Safety & known trouble spots
Safety reporting on I-35 tends to focus on specific segments rather than the route as a whole. According to CultureMap Austin, the Austin stretch has been reported as one of the deadliest in Texas, with a cited figure of 43 deadly wrecks between 2019 and 2023.
Central Texas segments are also frequently described as a heavy truck-crash corridor. As with all such figures, these crash counts come from local reporting and analyses and should be treated as public reports, not official rankings.
In the Dallas–Fort Worth area the route is signed as I-35E through Dallas and I-35W through Fort Worth, so local alerts and signage use those designations rather than a plain "I-35."
The claims above are drawn from the public reports and third-party analyses linked in Sources. We include them for context, not as official or settled rankings.

What to do if you crash on I-35
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone may be hurt or you are unsure.
- If vehicles are drivable and it's safe, move out of travel lanes to a shoulder and turn on hazard lights — interstate shoulders are dangerous, so stand well away from traffic.
- Exchange information and photograph documents, damage, and the scene.
- Give responders a factual account and get the report or incident number.
- Seek a medical evaluation even if you feel fine.
