About this data & methodology
RoadAlert News does not generate its own national crash counts. The statistics on these pages are drawn directly from public reports by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and its Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Where relevant we also reference the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
- The most recent final year for most federal figures is 2023. We use 2023 as the default reference year throughout.
- 2024 figures are preliminary or projected early estimates and are labeled as such wherever they appear. They may be revised.
- We show every statistic with its source and year, and link to the original publication so you can verify it.
