Safety & known trouble spots

I-4 is frequently cited as America's deadliest highway on a deaths-per-mile basis. According to analyses of federal (NHTSA) crash data reported by outlets such as FleetOwner and by law firms, the corridor has been associated with a widely-quoted figure of roughly 1.13 deaths per mile — corresponding to around 150 fatalities over the 2016–2019 period.

These are per-mile figures drawn from third-party analyses, not official government rankings; a short, intensely used road can top a per-mile list while longer roads have more total deaths. Reporting commonly points to heavy tourism traffic and years of major construction as contributing factors along the Orlando stretch.

For Orlando in particular, I-4 through downtown is the marquee corridor: shifting construction lanes, tight ramps, and large numbers of unfamiliar visiting drivers are repeatedly cited as reasons the drive can be demanding.

The claims above are drawn from the public reports and third-party analyses linked in Sources. We include them for context, not as official or settled rankings.

Traffic alerts & real-time conditions

Florida's FL511 system provides real-time conditions, incidents, and construction alerts for the entire I-4 corridor, including the Orlando segment.

For live incidents, closures, and construction on your stretch, the official state 511 / DOT system is always the authoritative source. Our Orlando hub links to the relevant local resources and recent reported incidents.

Tip: Check conditions before you leave, not while driving. If you are already on the road and need to report or check an incident, pull over safely first.

What to do if you crash on I-4

  • Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone may be hurt or you are unsure.
  • If vehicles are drivable and it's safe, move out of travel lanes to a shoulder and turn on hazard lights — interstate shoulders are dangerous, so stand well away from traffic.
  • Exchange information and photograph documents, damage, and the scene.
  • Give responders a factual account and get the report or incident number.
  • Seek a medical evaluation even if you feel fine.
